LEZs are mandatory in Spanish towns with over 50k residents or high pollution. Cars without an environmental label face a fine of €200.

Since January 1 in Spain, all towns with more than 50,000 inhabitants (and in those other municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants that present high levels of contamination) are obliged to implement a LEZ or Low Emission Zone.

In the already established LEZ areas (very few today), the only vehicles that cannot access them and circulate through the streets and roads included in these zones are those that They do not have the DGT environmental labelthat is to say, those passenger cars of gasoline registered before the year 2001 (which do not comply with Euro 3 or earlier regulations) and passenger cars diesel registered before 2006 (which do not comply with Euro 4 or earlier regulations).

The DGT has enabled a website so that all drivers can consult which is the environmental label that corresponds to your vehicle (if you don’t already know).

But, as we have said, although in most cities this environmental law is still pending, many already fine vehicles that do not have the DGT sticker. As reported by Tráfico on its website, “If you do not wear it visible, you will not be able to benefit from the advantages that the different badges entail”. Among them, unrestricted access to LEZs.

In the current Traffic and Road Safety Law that entered into force on March 21, 2022, the DGT establishes an economic fine of 200 euros (or 100 euros through the prompt payment modality) for all those vehicles that violate the access rules and restrictions in each ZBE area.
