Komjen Rycko Amelza Dahniel officially takes over as Head of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT). Rycko revealed President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) messages to him.

“Mr. President said to me to optimize deradicalization activities,” Rycko told reporters at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta, Monday (3/4/2023).

Rycko delivered BNPT focus on deradicalization of those who stumble on cases of radicalism and terrorism.

Therefore, he continued, there are three strategies in tackling terrorism. Rycko said that preventing and overcoming terrorists requires the synergy of all related parties.

“The first strategy is to prepare national preparedness, then the second is to implement counter-radicalization, and the third is to carry out deradicalization,” said Rycko.

Rycko added, law enforcement in terrorism cases is still being carried out. But law enforcement is a last resort.

“Although, we will also take action in the form of law enforcement. However, law enforcement will be placed as last resortthe last option in making efforts to counter ideology in terrorism,” Rycko explained.

“Where did this ideology develop from intolerant, further develop into a radical ideology, and finally into the use of threats of violence which is called a terrorist ideology like that,” he added.
