The amateurs of SV Spakenburg can’t wait to play against Xavi Simons, Ibrahim Sangaré and Luuk de Jong on Tuesday. The cup sensation from the fishing village does not think it has a chance against the stars of PSV in the historic semi-final. “We don’t want to be in awe of them.”
Wie denkt dat de spelers van SV Spakenburg sinds de bekerloting aan de buis gekluisterd zitten voor de duels van PSV, heeft het mis. Middenvelder Koen Wesdorp kijkt nooit naar de Eredivisie. “Ik zou de stand ook niet precies weten”, zegt hij zaterdag na de teleurstellende generale tegen OFC (1-1) in de catacomben van Sportpark De Westmaat.
Een paar uur later staat NEC-PSV op het programma. Het is voor de Eindhovenaren de laatste wedstrijd richting het bekerduel. Misschien dat Wesdorp die wedstrijd nog wel wil zien. “Maar als het me niet bevalt, of ik zie een leuke film voorbijkomen, dan is de keuze snel gemaakt”, zegt hij lachend. Begrijp Wesdorp niet verkeerd; hij is een voetballiefhebber. Maar hij kijkt alleen naar de Premier League, Champions League en FC Barcelona.
Wesdorps ploeggenoot Vince Gino Dekker is wél een fanatiek volger van het Nederlandse voetbal. Zo kijkt hij steevast naar de Eredivisie en het schakelkanaal van sportzender ESPN rond de Keuken Kampioen Divisie. PSV heeft hij niet extra gevolgd. “Dat was niet nodig. We weten allemaal precies wat zij kunnen.”
Dekker ‘just’ hopes for Xavi Simons
26-year-old Dekker is happy that the countdown is almost over. The star player, who played together with Matthijs de Ligt and Donny van de Beek in Ajax’s youth academy, has been overloaded with interview requests in recent weeks. “That was nice, but it’s time to show it on the pitch.”
During the conversation with Dekker, the name of Simons, this season’s great tastemaker at PSV, comes up. “It would be nice if he is in the starting line-up and is not spared”, Dekker responds. “It would only be nice for us if such guys play.”
Wesdorp will probably meet PSV midfielder Sangaré frequently on Tuesday. Although Wesdorp is not a regular follower of PSV, he knows all too well what type of player the Ivorian is. “It’s going to be nice to pound against each other,” he says with a smile.
“I am very curious whether he is really as strong as he seems on TV, I know that,” continues 25-year-old Wesdorp. “I’m afraid so, but I think it’s great to be able to test that.”

Dekker and Wesdorp are aware that a miracle is needed against PSV. After the sensational victories over FC Groningen (2-3) and FC Utrecht (1-4), confidence in a new cup stunt is undiminished in the fishing village.
An additional advantage for SV Spakenburg is that the game is played at its own Westmaat. There is artificial grass on the complex. Fans are also close to the field. PSV rarely sees that.
Dekker believes in a continuation of the cup fairy tale. “PSV has incredible qualities. Out of 100 times you might lose to them 99 times. But you never know what can happen. Certainly not in one cup match.”
“At times we have to collapse, but our intention is just to play football under the pressure and to chase them,” Wesdorp added. “We don’t want to be in awe of them.”
“At FC Utrecht we didn’t even win flattering. We knocked them off the mat,” says Wesdorp. “That image that people left the stadium early. We still talk about that now. It shows what we are capable of.”
