Spotify has yet to implement native support for the HomePod and HomePod mini, though Apple opened up the speakers to third-party music streaming services in 2020. Therefore, Spotify cannot be controlled using Siri on the HomePod.
bloombergMark Gorman touched on the topic in his newsletter Over the weekend, noting that Spotify told him there wasn’t a “huge number” of complaints about the lack of HomePod support. Published On the Spotify community site Making the case Original HomePod support has had more than 5,800 votes in favor of the idea since it was introduced in 2020, but Spotify refused to budge despite Apple making the necessary APIs available.
In 2019, Spotify accused Apple of anti-competitive conduct in a lawsuit filed in the European Union. Besides the complaint, Spotify has launched a Time to Play Fair website which lists alleged examples of unfair Apple practices, including preventing Spotify from supporting the HomePod natively. However, nearly three years after Spotify was able to support the HomePod without any additional action from Apple, it has yet to follow through.
Spotify has repeatedly promised to update its iPhone and iPad app with AirPlay 2 support, but has so far failed to do so. The app supports the original version of AirPlay, but it hasn’t yet supported AirPlay 2, which launched in 2018 with improvements like reduced buffering and support for stereo-paired HomePods.
Spotify told Gurman that it “remains committed to supporting AirPlay 2 at some point in the future” and is “on track for that to finally happen,” but the company couldn’t. Provide a specific timetable. Spotify has promised AirPlay 2 support since at least 2021, so subscribers have been waiting a long time.
