“Terminator 2”: It doesn’t get any better than that
After the first attempt to kill the leader of the human resistance failed, the cyborgs of 2029 once again sent a terminator back in time to finish off John Connor (Edward Furlong). The T-1000 (Robert Patrick) is even more powerful and dangerous than its predecessor, the T-800, but must first get rid of it if it is to eliminate the teenager. Because a T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) was programmed by the resistance to protect Connor at all costs.
The best action movies of all time
James Cameron (“Titanic”, “Avatar”) achieved the impossible with “Terminator 2”: With a budget of almost 100 million dollars in 1991 he made what was then the most expensive film of all time, which ended up being one of the most successful at the box office advanced – and today is represented in various leaderboards. It is not only one of the best action films, but also one of the greatest science fiction milestones in film history, against which blockbusters still have to be measured, both narratively and visually.
“Terminator 2” was not only a groundbreaking special effects spectacle in the early 1990s, it still is today. When the T-800 reveals its robotic arm encased in human flesh, or the T-1000 liquefies, freezes and eventually even shatters into a thousand pieces, those are VFX and CGI moments that will make your jaw drop even today .
As a technophile visionary, Cameron has always known how to push the boundaries of cinema, especially visually, and to expand the technical possibilities like hardly any other filmmaker – and thus creates great cinema for eternity, which is copied countless times, but only in the rarest cases is only partially achieved.
“T2” stands for pure spectacle cinema. To reduce the film to that would still not do it justice. Because James Cameron draws an oppressive future scenario, a dark dystopia that deals with the consequences of advancing technologization as well as with human primal fears and longings and the question of what meaning family has for us – all this in the face of the apocalypse.
Why Cameron is one of the greatest filmmakers of our time also becomes clear in his character drawings. Because not only does he transform one of the most famous and popular figures in action cinema with the T-800 by 180 degrees, transforming him from a futuristic grim reaper into a knight in shimmering (metallic) armour. On top of that, he also established one of the strongest female action figures of all time in Sarah Connor, played by Linda Hamilton.
And we don’t need to waste any more words at this point about the numerous iconic quotes and moments with which “Terminator 2” secured a permanent place in pop culture…
