Humpback salmon is an unwanted fish species in Norway. This summer it is expected to return in greater numbers than ever.
– It is said that ten times as many come every other year, so we are preparing for approximately 150,000 individuals to arrive in our rivers this summersays leader of the Vestre Jakobselv hunters and fishermen’s association Vidar Isaksen to VG.
Two years ago, humpback salmon invaded Norwegian rivers. The population was particularly large in Eastern Finnmark. The fish has a life cycle of two years and will therefore return this summer to spawn. VG writes that there will probably be more than ever.
– A few humpback salmon in the rivers do not pose a major problem, but the development we have seen since 2017 is very serious, says senior advisor Eirik Frøyland at the Norwegian Environment Agency.
How many individuals will come is unknown, but Frøyland stresses that there is no indication that the risk has been overestimated.
– Therefore, the answer can be anything from ten times as much as in 2021, to less than in 2021. It is possible to hope for the latter, but we are preparing for a new increase.
