L’AASS Karate Sarcelles (Val d’Oise) is indeed the best kumite club (fight) of the Old Continent.

In Guadalajara, en Spain, five of its eight selected are mounted on the podium of the European Championships.

The Ukrainian Anzhelika Terliuga raised the prapor, the yellow and blue flag of his country, while retaining his continental title in -55 kg. The victory is symbolic for the world champion (2022) and Olympic vice-champion (2021) since she acquired it after a preparation carried out in her country at war and without the presence of her long-time coach (Denys Morozov).

Titled Terliuga

During the competition, she acquired her 5e European medal (the third in gold after those of 2018 and 2022) by outclassing the English Vincent (8-0), the Scottish Connell (3-0) and the Italian Verónica Brunori (8-0, in the final). Only Germany’s Gizem Bugur (world No. 4) gave her a hard time in the semi-finals.

“She was moving a lot and managed to equalize at 2-2. But 8 seconds from the end, I managed to counter it to win (3-2)”, savors Anzhelika.

Azerbaijan Iryna Zaretska (winner in 2019) almost regained her title in -68 kg, but she was beaten in the final by the smallest margin (0-0, flags) by the Swiss Elena Quirici. “I prefer to remember my successes in the snatch against the Macedonian Vasilisa Bujic (4-2), the Spaniard Maria Nieto Mejias (7-7) and the Turkish Eda Eltemur (6-5)”, she underlines. The other Sarcellois medalists were French.

Garcia au finish

Recovered from a recent injury, Kilian Cizo participated in the silver medal of the French men’s kumite team.

On the other hand, he did not enter during the defeat of the Blues in the final against Ukraine (2-3 after leading 2-0). Alizée Agier won the team bronze medal against Serbia (2-0) after her 5th place in -68 kg.

Finally, Nancy Garcia has, like last year, acquired the bronze medal in +68 kg. Beaten in the semi-finals by Germany’s Kneer (3-4), Daniel de Barros’ protege then defeated Turkey’s Hocaoglu, world No. 2 (3-0) thanks to a successful mawashi-geri-chudan 3 seconds from the END.
