The line of people waiting to receive food went around the corner,

“No matter how hard I work, it’s not enough for me,” said Angelica Tenesaca.

At least 500 waited their turn to enter the evangelical church in Long Island City, Queens.

Durancy González arrived just three months ago from Colombia, crossing the jungle with her three children, the youngest of whom is disabled.

Durancy.

“I am very grateful to the people of this country because they have opened the doors for us, because they have given us the opportunity in health, housing, food, because they treat us equally, because they have given us the foundations to move forward,” Durancy said.

Go ahead with a job to fend for yourself, precisely Congresswoman Nydia Velásquez listened to immigrants and spoke about the serious problem of poverty in NYC.

Congressman Velázquez.

“If we set our mind to it, we can eliminate poverty, but we have to find solutions, where we can provide jobs, housing and at the same time, put these people to work who are willing to do so,” said Velásquez.

“I asked the congresswoman to help me with an appropriate school for my son, because what I want most is to work, I came here to undertake. I came with that dream of seeing my son get up from that chair and be able to walk Durancy added.

Pastor Michael Servello from Utica, NY, arrived with pallets full of apples, cucumbers, oranges, bell peppers, clothing and even toys for the immigrant children. He says there’s more where these donations come from.

“We can do more, but we need help with the transportation of all the donations. We ask that the City provide the funds to cancel the carriers and if any volunteer company helps us,” said Servello.

And according to Congresswoman Velásquez, poverty and need is such that even working families do not have a salary. We were able to verify that indeed, in the line there were not only immigrants.

“Here I am with three girls and my husband, who also works, days yes, days no, but we cannot pay for food, the monthly rent, everything,” explained Tenesaca.

“But the cost of food is really beyond the resources that these families have. It is a serious problem, the problem of poverty, the problem of hunger in New York City, as in the United States,” added Congresswoman Velásquez.
