Navjot Singh Sidhu, a Punjab Congress leader and former cricketer, is set to be released from Patiala jail today, 10 months after serving a sentence for a road-rage incident in which a man was killed 34 years ago. Sidhu had been handed a one-year sentence and was due to be released in May, but is being let go early due to his “good behaviour”. The Supreme Court had ordered his imprisonment in May 2022 following a petition from the family of the man who died after an argument over a parking spot. The family had requested a harsher sentence and a review of a 2018 order from the Supreme Court that had acquitted Sidhu of murder. In that incident, Sidhu and his friend allegedly dragged the victim out of his car and killed him with a blow to the head.
