Freiburg, FR-Littenweiler, FR-Oberau, B 31 Schützenallee Tunnel – Kappler Tunnel

On April 1, 2023 at around 12:25 a.m., several callers reported several young men who were “blow up” the engines of their cars in the underground car park of a public housing complex.

A patrol on the way to the site noticed how shortly before arrival three obviously high-powered vehicles just left the underground car park and drove away in the direction of “Kappler Knot”. Since these were the vehicles described, the patrol followed.

Even before the police patrol could carry out a check, the three vehicles turned onto the B 31 into the Kappler tunnel via the “Kappler knot” junction.

There, two of the vehicles (two BMWs, blue and black) immediately sat down next to each other and slowed down, forcing the following vehicles to slow down. In the middle between the two lanes – behind the BMW – another obviously high-powered vehicle (Mercedes, white) sat down and also delayed the following traffic. After some time of deceleration, this vehicle gave a signal by briefly flashing, which apparently prompted the two BMWs to start a race in the tunnel with mutual overtaking maneuvers and excessive speed.

The patrol vehicle, which drove unnoticed behind this group of vehicles, was able to follow the individual driving manoeuvres.

Even before reaching the western tunnel portal of Schützenallee, the police vehicle was able to ask the three cars to stop and then subject them to a check.

After describing the crimes to the responsible on-call prosecutor, he ordered the confiscation of the driving licenses of the two drivers (26 and 36 years old) of the illegal car race. Bad luck for the 26-year-old: when he was checked, it was noticed that he was heavily intoxicated. A check revealed a breath alcohol concentration of 0.56 mg/l. Regardless of what happened in the car race, he will probably have to do without his driver’s license for a little longer.

All drivers are collectively suspected of having carried out an illegal car race and of having committed an act of coercion against several other drivers. In addition to various environmental violations, the extent to which the “special use” according to the Road Traffic Act applies, which can result in very sensitive fines, will also be examined.

One of the vehicles, which had already attracted attention with its driver in connection with similar crimes, was confiscated to prevent further crimes under hazard prevention law. A confiscation is being examined.

The Freiburg-Süd police station (Tel.: 0761 882-4421) has taken over the investigation and is asking witnesses to the driving style and, in particular, road users who have been disabled or even endangered by the actions to report.
