A prototype of an electric train to be used in Cork has been unveiled, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future of public transportation in the city. With the push towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly practices, this development marks a significant step towards achieving Ireland’s climate goals. The prototype has been designed with passenger comfort in mind, promising to provide a reliable and smooth transportation option for commuters. In this article, we will take a closer look at the specifications of the new electric train and what this could mean for the future of transportation in Cork.
Irish Rail has presented a life-size prototype of a new DART+ fleet carriage, which they plan to introduce in Cork. The new battery-powered commuter trains will be bigger and more accessible and will provide sustainable mobility in Ireland. After the upgrade of the Cork commuter rail network, the electrified trains will be joined by a better rail system. Oliver Moran, councillor, stated that these will be the same trains running on the upgraded Cork system. The new Cork network will allow 10-minute frequency commuter trains after the upgrading of the track and stations. There is currently €200m worth of work happening between now and 2026 to prepare the Cork network. A French manufacturing company, Alstom, has developed the new carriages, which will prioritize commuter accessibility with dedicated spaces for wheelchair, cyclist, and family use. The carriages will also have charging facilities for laptops and phones, comfortable seating, improved security and customer information. The first order comprises 95 carriages, with 65 battery-electric and 30 electric versions, but the second order will include 90 battery-electric carriages that could possibly be used on the Cork commuter routes. They will enter service starting in 2026.
As the world shifts towards sustainable solutions, the unveiling of the electric train prototype marks a significant milestone towards Cork’s green transportation goals. This feat shows the city’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and providing efficient transportation for its residents. As we anticipate the launch of this train in the future, it’s worth celebrating the achievements made so far and the continuous efforts to create a cleaner and brighter future for Cork. The possibilities are endless, and this electric train will undoubtedly play an essential role in shaping the city’s future.
