The mayor of Little Rock has asked the state governor for help from the National Guard. The roofs and walls of many dozens of houses have been torn off by the storm. Cars are on their side and trees have been ripped out of the ground.

The tornado is part of a severe weather system that extends from the southern United States to the Great Lakes region in the north. The National Weather Service has announced an increased tornado risk for this area. Tens of millions of people live in that part of the US.
A week earlier, a tornado in the states of Mississippi and Alabama killed at least 26 people.
