The Cabinet of Ministers of Cyprus has adopted a package of nine measures to combat riots during sports competitions. They were announced Minister of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus Anna KUKKIDIS-PROKOPIOUreported by local publications.
In particular, it is proposed to toughen the punishment for aggressive fans by increasing the maximum term of the ban on visiting stadiums to 10 years, to amend the legislation to allow random tests for alcohol and drugs among fans, to give the green light to the police to strengthen the physical examination of fans before the start of matches to identify and confiscation of illegal and dangerous items, to equip all sports stadiums and grounds where matches are played with a video surveillance system.
The events that took place on March 26 became the reason for such measures. After the game in the framework of the Cyprus Basketball Cup, a conflict broke out between the fans, which escalated into clashes with police officers.
