In the United States, each state has its own driver licensing system. However, there are basic rules that apply to all states.
In general, the steps to obtain a US driver’s license include:
Take an eye test
The level of vision needed to obtain a driver’s license varies according to the requirements of each state. However, in general, candidates must have vision of 20/40 or better with or without correction (glasses or contact lenses) to be able to drive. There is no special permit for drivers who wear contact lenses, but in the event of a police check or a traffic accident, if the driver is not wearing his glasses or contact lenses and his vision does not meet the minimum requirements, it could be considered an offense and result in a fine or suspension of the driver’s license.
Take a written test
The subjects that the candidate must master are:
- The rules of the road: priority, speed limits and distances from s. vii
- Road signs: road signs, traffic lights and road markings.
- Driving in difficult weather conditions, such as rain, fog or snow.
- Road safety including the correct use of seat belts, child restraint systems and vehicle safety devices
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including drunk driving laws
The candidate must obtain a minimum score to pass the written test and obtain a driver’s license. If the candidate fails the test, they may be allowed to retake it after a state-determined waiting period.
Take a driving test
The New York State practical driving test takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
In general, to take the New York State practical driving test, you must provide your own insured and roadworthy vehicle for the exam. You can also rent a vehicle if you do not have access to a personal car or prefer not to use your own car for the test. However, before renting a vehicle for the test drive, you must ensure that the vehicle meets DMV requirements (Department of Motor Vehicles) of the State of New York and that you have adequate liability insurance for the vehicle. It is important to check with the New York State DMV for specific vehicle requirements for the drive test.
Get a provisional driver’s license
Once the candidate has passed the written and driving tests, he can receive a provisional driving license.
Get a permanent driver’s license
After a fixed period of time, usually six months, the candidate can obtain a permanent driving license if he has complied with all the required conditions.
