Spain suffered a painful defeat on Tuesday in the qualifying series for the European Championship of 2024. The three-time European champion lost 2-0 to Scotland. Feyenoord player Orkun Kökçü could not surprise Croatia with Turkey: 0-2.
Spain’s disgrace showed itself early on at Hampden Park. After seven minutes of play, Scott McTominay opened the scoring in Glasgow. The Manchester United midfielder tapped in a cross from Andrew Robertson, with Spain goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga not unpunished.
Spain failed to equalize via striker Joselu and was presented with the bill. After Spain’s poor defense, McTominay had a free shooting opportunity shortly after the break, which the midfielder did not miss.
Scotland’s first victory over Spain in 39 years takes the lead in Group A of the qualifying series for the 2024 European Championship in Germany. On Saturday, the Scots won the first game against Cyprus 3-0. Spain then triumphed 3-0 against Norway.
There is still little going on for Spain. The numbers one and two qualify directly for the European Championship at the end of the qualifying series. In addition, Norway did not get further than a 1-1 draw against Georgia earlier in the day.
Spain will travel to the Netherlands in June for the final round of the Nations League. Italy is the opponent in the semifinals in Enschede. The Orange or Croatia, who are in the other semi-final, awaits in the final.

Kökçü cannot stunt with Turkey
Feyenoord player Kökçü could not help Turkey with a sensation against Croatia. The Croats won 0-2 in Bursa, where an impressive banner was displayed before kick-off in memory of the victims of the country’s severe earthquakes.
Croatia had already reached the final score at halftime thanks to two goals from Mateo Kovacic. Kökçü was taken off halfway through the second half. At first glance, this was not due to an injury, as was the case with his Dutch clubmates Lutsharel Geertruida and Mats Wieffer.
Wales gave Saturday’s surprising draw against Croatia a good follow-up with a 1-0 win over Latvia. The highlight was the honoring of record international Gareth Bale, who said goodbye to the audience before kick-off. Bale abruptly ended his impressive career in January, which took him past Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur, among others.
Switzerland also beat Israel in group I (3-0) and thus had a clear start to the European Championship qualifying series. Previously, the Swiss were too strong for Belarus with 0-5. Switzerland is tied in points with Romania, which won 2-1 against Belarus on Tuesday.
