The Scottish Parliament on Tuesday approved newly appointed Scottish National Party leader Hamza Yusuf as prime minister, becoming the first Muslim to hold the post.
According to the local newspaper, The Scotsman, Hamza Yusuf won 71 votes to be officially appointed as Nicola Sturgeon’s successor, thanks to the support of the Scottish Green Party.
Yusuf became the sixth prime minister in Scotland and the first from an ethnic minority background. He is also the youngest minister at the age of thirty-seven, and the first Muslim to lead a major party in the United Kingdom.
Hamza Yusuf won the leadership of the Scottish National Party, earlier today, after obtaining 26 thousand and 32 votes, defeating his rival Kate Forbes, who obtained 23 thousand and 890 votes, and if Youssef is elected tomorrow, Tuesday, by the Scottish Parliament, he will become prime minister.
