Marvel has announced a brutal return in Captain America 4. Liv Tyler has officially returned to the MCU as Betty Ross in New World Order. The fourth installment of the Sentinel of Liberty franchise will feature Anthony Mackie as the lead. Sam Wilson’s first solo film is making some surprising connections to the MCU by drawing heavily from The Incredible Hulk. The studio had already confirmed that The Leader (Samuel Sterns) would be the villain. It was also announced that Harrison Ford will play President Thunderbolt Ross in a recast following the death of William Hurt.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Captain America 4 cast includes Liv Tyler, who returns as Betty Ross 16 years after her only appearance as the character in The Incredible Hulk. Liv Tyler starred with Edward Norton in the second film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the love interest of Bruce Banner and the daughter of Thunderbolt Ross. Since her last appearance, Liv Tyler has kept busy starring in The Leftovers, Harlots and 9-1-1: Lone Star on television, as well as a role in Ad Astra.
Why Betty Ross is back after so long
The decision to bring back Liv Tyler as Betty Ross for Captain America 4 comes after nearly two decades of questions about his possible return. Uncertainty over his future in the MCU increased when Marvel changed the role of the Hulk and replaced Edward Norton with Mark Ruffalo. This led to a split between the Hulk story and what was featured in The Incredible Hulk. None of the supporting characters from the films returned until William Hurt reprized his role as Thunderbolt Ross in Civil War.
