Marc Marquez failed to escape sanctions after crashing Miguel Oliveira Of MotoGP Portugal. MotoGP announced a change in the application of the penalty against the Repsol Honda rider.
Marc Marquez was given a double long lap penalty at the Argentina MotoGP, after crashing into RNF racer Miguel Oliveira at the Portugal MotoGP, last Sunday (26/3/2023). But the penalty was in the process forfeited.
Because Marquez is confirmed to be absent in Argentina this weekend because he has to undergo hand surgery. He had a fractured right thumb.
The MotoGP Stewards Panel is in the process of changing the application of the sanction, in order to give effect to Marc Marquez for his actions which are considered to endanger other riders. The penalty will apply to the series followed by Marquez after recovering later.
“Following the decision of the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel which was taken on Sunday (26/3/2023) at 15.13, the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel hereby wishes to clarify the decision regarding its implementation,” said a MotoGP statement.
“In view of the injury and absence of Marc Marquez, rider number 93, at the Gran Premio Michelin de La Republica Argentina, and with the aim of complying with the intent underlying the decision of the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel, the double long lap penalty shall be carried out by the top rider in the next MotoGP race. that he can follow.”
Marc Marquez’s action at the Portugal MotoGP invited a series of criticisms from other riders. Aleix Espargaro and Jorge Martin, for example, asked the 30-year-old racer to be punished more severely for repeated careless actions.
