Is it a coincidence that a Muslim has become the latest leader of Scotland?

37-year-old Hamza Yousaf heads Scottish Nationalists to become Scotland’s youngest First Minister

Hamza Yousaf was elected as the new leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.

The agency noted that this came after a bitter race that exposed the party’s policy divisions and the province’s faltering campaign for independence.

Hamza Yousaf, 37, will become Scotland’s youngest First Minister and the first from an ethnic minority.

The newly elected leader of the SNP is expected to be officially confirmed as the sixth First Minister of Scotland after a vote in the regional parliament tomorrow, DPA reported.

Last month, Nicola Sturgeon, who was Scotland’s longest-serving first minister, announced she was stepping down after more than eight years in the post.

Yousaf will succeed her after defeating current Scottish Chancellor of the Exchequer Kate Forbes and former Public Safety Secretary Ash Regan in the party’s first leadership election in nearly two decades.

“The Scottish people need independence now more than ever and we will be the generation to achieve that independence for Scotland,” the leader-elect said in a speech after the election results were announced.
