JERUSALEM – Opposition to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s move to curtail the powers of the judiciary has become public in the cabinet and the ruling Likud party. Defense Minister Yoav Galant demanded that the reforms to control the judiciary be stopped. Prominent Likud party leaders Yuli Edelstein, David Biden, and Avi Dichter also called for a halt to the reforms. Protests have been raging across Israel for 12 weeks against Netanyahu’s move to overhaul the justice system.
“The security of Israel is my goal in life. For that, the current reform measures should be stopped” – said Galant, a confidant of Netanyahu. He said that one should not ignore the anger spreading in the army against the reform process. If these four people, who have now made their protest public, vote against it, the law cannot be passed. Edelstein chairs Parliament’s powerful Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
Prominent historian Yuval Noah Harari also made public his protest against the government action. The Movement for Quality Government in Israel has called for legal action against Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption, as his interference in the judiciary is against conflict of interest agreements.
