Lights out for climate protection – many in the south-west took part. Churches, castles and monuments also remained dark. But there were other reasons for this this year.

Around 150 municipalities in Baden-Württemberg took part in the worldwide Earth Hour on Saturday evening. The environmental protection organization WWF had called for the lights to be switched off for an hour at 8.30 p.m. and thus set an example for climate and environmental protection. Not only did numerous citizens around the world switch off the lights for an hour, but also well-known buildings were no longer illuminated for 60 minutes.

For example, the facade of the baroque basilica in Weingarten near Ravensburg was not illuminated by spotlights as is usual. Only the path lights were on. Ludwigsburg Palace was one of the state palaces and gardens. From 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. the castle lighting was switched off.

The State Ministry in Stuttgart pointed out that the country had reduced lighting as much as possible overall since last summer in view of the war in Ukraine as a contribution to saving energy.

Numerous cities around the world participated in Earth Hour. It was first held in Sydney in 2007.
