Activision Blizzard is on the brink of being purchased by Microsoft.

One of the regulatory bodies that most opposed Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard was the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) of the United Kingdom, an entity that today has given us quite a surprise, since has recognized that this purchase operation will not affect free competition in the gaming and video console market, and has given its provisional approval to this operation.

It is a provisional approval because, according to the CMA, it wants to continue carrying out investigations into the possible impact that the purchase of Activision Blizzard would have on the cloud gaming sector, and therefore will not offer a final assessment until April 26. In little more than a month the future of this purchase operation will be decided.

Where does this leave us? Well in a very favorable situation for Microsoft, that it has gone from having almost everything against it to having it almost everything in favor, since both the CMA and the European Union have come to show a more favorable attitude towards said operation, and except for surprise, everything seems to indicate that both will give the go-ahead to the Redmond Giant.

If you’re wondering what happened to make the CMA change its mind so drastically, the answer is simple, they’ve come to the conclusion that making the Call of Duty franchise exclusive to Xbox would be detrimental to Microsoft. , because said saga you would lose a huge market share and not generate the same revenue. It was logical from the beginning, and that they have now realized this shows that they do not know the market they regulate.

As for Activision Blizzard, the group has been favorable to the purchase operation by Microsoft from the beginning, and has done the same with this provisional verdict of the CMA. Not everything is done yet, there are some hurdles to come, but there is no doubt that the situation has made a 180 degree turn, since we have gone from a scenario in which Microsoft was with an almost general rejection to a situation in which it could be less than a month away from receiving final approval from Europe and the United Kingdom.

We must also take into account that the approval of both could generate an important influence on the decisions of the rest of the regulatory entities, and shape the a kind of “snowball” effect that ends up paving the way for the Redmond giant. Personally, today I am clearer than ever that Activision Blizzard will end up in the hands of Microsoft, looking at the current scenario I think it is one step away from achieving it, and that this step will be completed next April, except for surprises.
