The station wagon body will be the only option for the new generation Passat.

Volkswagen’s idea of abandoning the sedan body in the new generation Passat was rumored for a long time, but now the manufacturer has confirmed it. VW brand manager Thomas Schaefer in an interview Automotive News Europe has indicated that the new generation Passat will be available only as a station wagon, despite the fact that the sedan was the best-selling model in Europe in its segment.

Schaefer also revealed that deliveries of the new generation Passat will start as early as September, which means that we will actually see the new car very soon, within the next couple of months. The production of the new model has been transferred to the factory in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

At the same time, the chairman of the board of the Volkswagen brand briefly outlined Škoda’s plans – deliveries of the new Superb will begin at the end of the year. Superb will be available in station wagon and liftback form. Schaefer revealed that the development of the new Passat was led by Škoda, but he did not go into further details. Both models are expected to use an improved version of the MQB platform, as well as improved engines designed to meet stricter emissions criteria in the coming years. It has already been confirmed that the Superb will have a plug-in version, so it is expected that the Passat will also get one.
