Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Yusuf bin Alawi, former foreign minister of the Sultanate of Oman, described Iraqi President Saddam Hussein as a “leader”, pointing out his position on execution and his choice of “martyrdom” over flight.
This came in an interview conducted by the former Omani official with RT, where he responded to a question about the impression left by Saddam Hussein after his meetings with him, saying: “He is a leader and in view of his responsibility or his duty to lead the Arab nation to end all existing problems in the Middle East… “
He pointed out that “Saddam Hussein was aware at that time that he would end, whether through a document or an initiative or whatever, because it was no longer acceptable according to the measure of the brave Arabs, that it was better for him to be martyred and not to flee.”
He added: “He (Saddam Hussein) is a patriot of high standards, but whoever leads countries and leads governments should be prudent and intelligent so that he can achieve what he should achieve at the lowest costs.”
