Governor spotlights water initiatives in global forum to support water conservation efforts in Latin America.

Participate in Waves of Change: Talking the Untalkable 2023, in New York.

The Governor of Nuevo León, Samuel Alejandro García Sepúlveda, presented the State’s strategy on water matters and highlighted the importance of multisectoral collective action to guarantee supply until the year 2050.

During his participation in the opening of Waves of Change: Talking the Untalkable 2023, in New York, the President pointed out that this year, in coordination with the Federal Government, the construction of the El Cuchillo II Aqueduct and the Libertad Dam will be completed.

He also emphasized actions that are carried out in the entity, such as the repair of leaks, the construction and rehabilitation of wells, the incorporation of industrial and agricultural wells, the implementation of reducers, fines and sanctions for businesses that do not use water. Responsibly; the modulation of pressures, the bombardment of clouds, as well as the beginning of the Modernization and Technification Project of the Chapotal irrigation outlets.

“This year we are going to complete projects that were planned for 30 or 40 years,” said García Sepúlveda.

“The projects consist of the second Aqueduct of El Cuchillo, which will double its capacity from 5 to 10 cubic meters per second; we are going to finish a dam that will have the longest curtain in Latin America, and with only these two of us increased the capacity from 16 to 26 liters per second,” he added.

In addition, the Governor of Nuevo León addressed the drought that different countries around the world are currently facing, such as France, the United States, China, and Mexico, whose rivers, lakes, and dams have been severely affected. In the case of Nuevo León, the Governor indicated that the corruption of past state administrations aggravated the water crisis.

Lorena Guillé-Laris, Executive Director, FEMSA Foundation, considered it urgent to contribute with actions in Latin America for the care and responsible use of water.

“It is urgent to change the direction in which we are going in Latin America, and within the framework of this conference we make a call to recognize that our region needs us; today it is an obligation to invest in innovations, collaborate with confidence and design with a vision of the future”, he pointed out.

After his presentation, García Sepúlveda continued with his participation in the Resilient Cities panel with Stewart Sarkozy-Banoczy, Global Director of Policy and Investment, Resilient Cities Network; Patricia Abreu, Director of the Santo Domingo Water Fund; and Pedro Ribeiro, Senior Manager of Urban Floods, C40.

Waves of Change LATAM is the space with which Fundación FEMSA has managed to bring high-level events within the framework of the United Nations Conference on Water.
