The family of a terminally ill four-year-old girl in Ireland have been promised that she will be allowed to die at home following their public plea for palliative care. Fiadh O’Connor was diagnosed with aggressive neuroblastoma in 2019 and has received extensive treatment. Her cancer recently relapsed for a third time and her family were told that she required end-of-life care. Her aunt, Orlaigh Murphy, made a public appeal after being advised by hospital staff to put pressure on the media and politicians to secure palliative care for Fiadh. The southeast of Ireland has experienced a lack of paediatric palliative care since 2017, leaving some families to plead publicly for the right to home care. Fiadh’s case follows that of seven-year-old Danny Norris who also suffered from neuroblastoma and required home palliative care. A spokesperson for the HSE said a comprehensive care package had been finalised to allow Fiadh to be cared for at home.
