Pensioenfonds ABP will compensate 8,000 affected participants. In 2020, they were paid a large amount in one go, because they were entitled to a disability pension in the years before, but had not received it.
But because they received that arrears of pension money in one go, they had to pay more income tax than if they had received it over several years.
Due to that high income, people were also cut back in 2020 on, for example, the healthcare allowance. ABP board chairman Harmen van Wijnen said at consumer program Max Reporting Center people to compensate for this.
People with a WIA benefit can get a supplement from the ABP, but they actually have to apply for it themselves. That is then a disability pension.
Not a large amount
After an information campaign by the ABP in 2019, it turned out that 8,000 people had often been entitled to this for years without receiving it. The ABP therefore still paid out that money, with negative consequences.
A total of about 100 million euros was paid out in arrears of pension. MAX Ombudsman Rogier de Haan thinks that ABP will now have to pay about 20 million euros for this compensation.
Harmen van Wijnen of ABP has not yet made any statements about how large the amount will be. Compared to the 459 billion euros in invested capital that ABP manages, several tens of millions of euros are therefore not a large amount for the largest pension fund in the Netherlands.
