NHK Reports: Man with a knife shot by police officer and later dies in Osaka

On the night of the 24th, in Izumi City, Osaka, a police officer who rushed to the scene after receiving a report of trouble between a mother and her son fired a pistol bullet at her son who came with a knife. Police are investigating the situation at the time, as the bullet hit him near his right chest and he died soon after.

After 7:00 pm on the 24th, a relative called the police at an apartment in Minata 5-chome, Izumi City, saying that “a mother was killed by her son.”

According to the police, when three police officers rushed, a son in his 30s with a knife was rampaging in the parking lot of the apartment, and then entered the room and locked it.

For this reason, when the police officer cut the chain at the entrance and entered the room, he came with a knife, and the male lieutenant fired a pistol bullet and hit near the right chest.

The police arrested the son on the spot on suspicion of attempted murder and released him immediately because he needed treatment, but he died soon after being transported to the hospital.

Also, in the parking lot, men in their 50s and 20s who live in the same apartment have injured their necks and faces, and both are believed to have been cut by their sons and are being treated at the hospital.

The police are investigating the detailed situation by hearing the circumstances from the mother.

Masakazu Ozaki, deputy chief of the Izumi Police Station of the Osaka Prefectural Police, commented, “It is regrettable that the suspect passed away, but we are currently investigating the details.”

A man who lives nearby “sounds like a gunshot”

A man who lives near the scene said, “I heard a police officer say “Come out” near the scene. I could see him doing a heart massage inside. I was surprised that there weren’t any commotions like this around here.”
