At the last minute, the Bremen fire department rescued a woman from a burning apartment on Wednesday night (March 22, 2023). The emergency services were alerted to the fire on Ludwigshafener Straße in the Tenever district shortly after 1 a.m.
A kitchen burned on the tenth floor of a high-rise building. A 39-year-old mother was unable to leave the burning room and wanted to get to safety from the flames, the fire department said. When the fire brigade arrived on site, the woman was already standing at a height of 28 meters on the window sill on the tenth floor of the 16-storey building. The apartment behind her was on fire. While some rescuers prepared a safety cushion as a precaution, other firefighters went into the building.
Literally at the last minute, the rescue workers reached the 39-year-old, pulled her back into the apartment and were able to get her out of her burning apartment. She suffered severe burn injuries in the fire and was flown to a special clinic by helicopter after first aid.
According to the information, two children aged 10 and 15 were in the apartment when the fire broke out. However, they were able to save themselves in the stairwell, while their mother’s escape route was cut off by the flames. The children were taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation. Five residents are believed to have been injured in the fire.
The flames in the Osterholz district could be extinguished in less than an hour, it was said. The cause of the fire is still unclear, the police are investigating.
