S The United States will send older Abrams tanks to Ukraine, which should speed up delivery, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder announced today, CNN reports.
Instead of the previously planned M1-A2 model, the older M1-A1, of which there is inventory in Europe, will be delivered.

“After research and analysis of how best to do it, the Ministry of Defense in close coordination with Ukraine decided to provide the M1-A1 variant of the Abrams tank, which will allow us to implement in a significantly accelerated time frame by the fall of this year the delivery of the equipment giving an important combat capability,” Ryder pointed out.

He added that the US would also provide Ukraine with “advanced armor and weapon systems” that are “very similar in capability” to the M1-A2, including 50-caliber heavy machine guns and 120mm cannons.
