The central immigration agency of Bali, Indonesia, has been ordered to revoke the visa-on-arrival scheme for Russian and Ukrainian visitors due to a surge in crimes committed by tourists from these countries, including overstaying of visas and illegal work in various industries. Since the borders reopened, Bali has experienced a rise in visitors from Russia and Ukraine, prompting stricter visa rules. In 2019, the island destination welcomed 6.2 million foreign visitors, and the spike in Russian and Ukrainian visitors has led to greater scrutiny and deportation of those violating local laws. Bali is planning to ban tourists from renting motorcycles after a spate of road accidents caused by rule-breaking motorists, and a recent five-day operation monitored criminal activities, particularly among tourists, before the Balinese day of silence.
