West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has criticized Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi at an internal meeting, saying that if he remains the face of the opposition, then Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot be targeted. Sources have reported that Banerjee accused the BJP of trying to make Gandhi a hero and stated that the Congress, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM), and BJP are instigating minorities against her Trinamool Congress. Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress was recently defeated in a minority-dominated area by the Congress party. Banerjee has had a difficult relationship with the Congress in recent years, as the Trinamool Congress has eaten into the Congress’ votes. The Congress party had attacked Banerjee in the lead-up to the Bengal elections, pointing to political violence and the Saradha scam. The two parties had held back-channel talks about forming a united front against the BJP in 2024, but these talks collapsed after the recent defeat of Trinamool Congress in Murshidabad. Banerjee has since stated that she will go it alone in the election.
