Friedberg (pm). Water is the foundation of life and a necessary component of everyday life. That is why the United Nations call for “World Water Day” every year on March 22nd. This year’s motto is “Together faster to the goal”. This is to emphasize the importance of working together to ensure safe water and sanitation for all by 2030.
»In Friedberg, with more than 134.5 kilometers of pipelines, the municipal utility supplied around 1.94 million m3 of water to consumers in 2022. To secure the drinking water supply, we continuously invest in the renewal and expansion of our pipeline network and in the associated systems,” explains operations manager Klaus Detlef Ihl.
Stadtwerke Friedberg would have had water losses of two percent in 2022. “That’s why we have one of the safest and highest quality drinking water supply systems in Germany in Friedberg,” says Ihl.
Eco-friendly alternatives
However, in order to preserve and protect the valuable resource of water for everyone, it is important to use drinking water carefully. The direct consumption of drinking water for drinking, cooking or washing per person in Germany is around 127 liters. In Friedberg there are 117 liters of drinking water a day.
But water is also used in the production of food, in cars or mobile phones – that is the indirect water consumption. Every year, experts record how much water a person actually needs in Germany. According to the Federal Environment Agency, that is more than 219 billion cubic meters of water, according to the expert. »That is more than twice as much as the water in Lake Constance. Therefore, the environment and we all benefit the most when private households do more to save drinking water, when fewer consumer goods are wasted and less hot water is used,” says Ihl.
Stadtwerke customers could also make another important contribution, namely using detergents and cleaning agents sparingly and not discarding residues of solvents, medicines, pesticides, photographic chemicals, cosmetics, wood preservatives, batteries, paints and varnishes in the waste water.
“And when you’re shopping, you should consider whether there aren’t more environmentally friendly alternatives, such as solvent-free paints or rechargeable batteries,” suggests Ihl. In order to raise awareness of the number one foodstuff, drinking water, Stadtwerke Friedberg therefore provides local citizens with a wide range of information on the subject of water.
An information campaign by the city for elementary school children and citizens is planned, using the “Water in Climate Change” exhibition by the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main regional association, in order to strengthen the appreciation for drinking water. All this is under the leadership of the climate protection manager of the city of Friedberg, Dr. Rohn-Nemudrova. »On the one hand we want to emphasize the unprecedented value of drinking water, on the other hand we want to motivate people to save water. And for that, society needs each and every one of us, including the children,” emphasizes the manager of Stadtwerke Friedberg.
