Raoul Servais, the filmmaker and animator, aged 94, has died.

Servais was born in Ostend in 1928. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. There he developed his style and experimented with animation techniques. In 1963 he founded the Animated Film Department, where he taught for many years. Servais was awarded more than sixty times, including the Golden Palm for ‘Harpya’ at the Cannes Film Festival in 1979.

In addition to being a filmmaker, Servais was also a painter and illustrator. In 2019, he donated part of his archive to the King Baudouin Foundation.
