At first glance, this station wagon appears ordinary, but it once belonged to a renowned actor.

Few people really get their heads around Volvo – although they like to praise the Swedish brand for its reliability – the 740 station wagon, which once belonged to the partially Hungarian Paul Newman, definitely deserves some attention. During his acting career, which spanned from 1951 until his death in 2008, he won Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTAs, and in addition to his love of watches, he also loved cars.

The fact that the hood hides something completely different than we think is not so surprising anymore, but it is even more so that there was no Volvo engine hidden under it even when it was new. When Newman took possession of the car in 1988, he requested a V6 Buick powerplant instead of the original 2.3-liter powertrain. In terms of performance, this represents a significant leap: instead of 158, 248 horsepower is delivered to the rear axle. In addition to the higher performance, the torque has also increased considerably, to 481 Nm.

The traditional 2.3-liter Volvo engine was replaced by a 3.8-liter Buick V6 powertrain.

The 35-year-old Volvo 740 is in beautiful condition both inside and out, especially considering its age.

Even with the new engine, the series of technical modifications did not end: it also received a Borg Warner five-speed manual transmission from the Pontiac Firebird and a new differential.

Bring A Trailer for Newman’s car on the side interested parties could bid until March 17 – in the late evening hours, it was finally knocked down for 80,740 dollars, converted to more than 30 million forints, after a total of 68 offers. For this amount, the new, very lucky owner can drive around in a vintage, metallic dark gray Volvo, the classic, retro atmosphere of which is only reinforced by the 16″ five-spoke rims, as well as the black leather interior, which is also in good condition.
