Jessica Schlegel from Leipzig surprisingly won the final on the balance beam at the international DTB Cup in Stuttgart. The 17-year-old achieved 13.433 points in the decision of the best six gymnasts of the Team Challenge on this apparatus and thus relegated the Belgian Maellyse Brassart (13.133) and the French Léa Franceries (12.733) to the other podium places. European Champion Emma Malewski from Chemnitz missed out on progress on Saturday after a fall.
In front of 2500 spectators in the Porsche Arena, Schlegel registered as the fifth starter with the judges. Despite minor uncertainties, she got through her program well and, with a difficulty score of 6.1 points, even achieved two tenths more than her second place in the preliminary competition. This meant the highest D value in the field.
When the American Ashlee Sullivan, who had achieved an even better result on Saturday, was relegated as the last participant in the final, victory for the Germans was certain. For Schlegel it was not only the first international podium finish; she has also never won a medal at the senior level at national level.
Karina Schönmaier from Chemnitz finished second with 13.016 points behind American Joscelyn Roberson (14.083). However, only two gymnasts had applied for this final. Meolie Jauch from Stuttgart came fourth on the uneven bars and just barely missed another podium place with 13,500 points.
In the final mixed competition, the Germans secured second place with uneven bars European champion Elisabeth Seitz from Stuttgart, Sarah Voss from Cologne, Anna-Lena König from Karlsruhe, Andreas Toba from Hanover, Pascal Brendel from Wetzlar and Milan Hosseini from Böckingen. In a four-way battle with Brazil, Japan and the USA, they came second and made it into the so-called gold final. Here, with 52.583 points after performances on balance beam and pommel horse, they had to admit defeat to the sextet from Japan around all-around Olympic champion Daiki Hashimoto, who scored 55.833 points on parallel bars and high bar. Brazil won the bronze medal match with 54.632 points against the USA (54.466).
