Belkin discards Matter standard plinths in the bushes.

Matter could be called a well-known, but not yet really accessible smart home standard. IKEA, Aqara, and a couple of other manufacturers have widely announced their work on Matter devices and equipping older devices with Matter.

But it just looks like Matter will take and lose a well-known name from the supporters’ ranks. Belkin has announced that it is halting development of its Wemo devices, at least temporarily, to rethink its approach to creating smart home accessories. At least that’s what Belkin says.

Matter is a unified protocol that will ensure convenient cooperation and management capabilities of various smart home devices. Not every smart light bulb, every toaster will have its own app on your smartphone. Matter plans have smart devices conveniently and simply managed with the help of already existing Wi-Fi at home. What’s more, Matter promises that all device control will be local, rather than the devices relying on the cloud, which is most likely an old laptop somewhere in Asia.

At the moment, the vast majority of Internet of Things devices rely on the operation and stability of servers, but Matter wants to ensure the abandonment of the sometimes so fragile Internet connection. At the same time, this would mean faster operation of the smart home and improved security.
