The high seas patrol boat “PM L’Her” docked at the port of Cotonou for a five-day stopover full of activities. The objective of this mission is to strengthen cooperation between the Beninese and French armed forces in the fight against maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. The “PM L’Her” patrol boat is a French Flamant-type warship, 55 meters long and with a capacity of 18 crew members. It is equipped with light and heavy weapons as well as sophisticated electronic surveillance means.
This stopover in Cotonou was an opportunity to hand over equipment to the Beninese Navy to improve its surveillance capabilities at sea. Joint surveillance patrols were also organized to exchange practices and techniques in the fight against maritime piracy. In addition to training activities, the mission of “PM L’Her” also made it possible to strengthen ties between the two countries. Two Beninese sailors were thus decorated with the French national defense medal for their contribution to Franco-Beninese cooperation in the field of maritime security.
The Gulf of Guinea is indeed a strategic area for France, which deploys military forces there to fight against maritime piracy. Benin, meanwhile, faces many security challenges in the region, including the rise of terrorism and cross-border criminal activities. This stopover by the patrol boat “PM L’Her” in Cotonou thus testifies to France’s commitment alongside Benin in the fight against threats at sea and its desire to relaunch military cooperation between the two countries.
