Prevent Access to WhatsApp Profile Photo: Steps to Hide it from Selected Contacts

Do you want to hide your WhatsApp profile picture from specific contacts, but don’t know how to do it? We explain how you can do this.

Most people upload a photo of themselves to their messenger and social media account profiles so that their contacts can recognize them at first glance. But understandably, not every user wants their uploaded image to be visible to everyone on the Internet. To avoid this, you have several options.

Hide profile picture using privacy settings

WhatsApp has special privacy settings that protect your profile picture from nosy strangers. You can find this on Android as well as on an iPhone under “Settings > Privacy”. There you will see, among other things, the “Profile picture” button, which offers the following options:

  • “Everyone”: With this setting, everyone who has your cell phone number can see your profile picture.
  • “My Contacts”: Only people you have saved in your own contact list can access your photo.
  • “My contacts except…”: This option allows you to select exceptions from your contact list that are not allowed to see your profile picture. For all other contacts, however, the picture remains accessible.
  • “Nobody”: Absolutely nobody but you can see your profile photo. Not even your own contacts.

The third option in the data protection settings is ideal for specifically hiding your WhatsApp profile picture from individual people.

Alternatively, if you block contacts, they will also lose access to your profile photo. Please note, however, that the exchange of messages of any kind with the respective person is then no longer possible.

This will completely delete your profile picture

If you choose the last option of the data protection settings and want to hide your photo from all Messenger users anyway, you can alternatively remove it completely from your user profile. You can do this by first opening the settings within WhatsApp.

On an Android smartphone, continue as follows:

  1. Tap on your profile picture.
  2. Then press the small button with the camera symbol that appears at the bottom right of your photo.
  3. On the far right of the menu that appears, tap the trash can icon.

With an iPhone, the path looks very similar:

  1. Select “Edit” just below your profile picture.
  2. Tap “Edit” again at the top right.
  3. Press the “Delete photo” button.

If you ever want to upload a photo of yourself again, you can do this in the same place in the WhatsApp settings.
