Rephrased: Great news- The worst is now behind us.

It was a difficult start to the weekend in terms of weather. Both in Southern Norway and in Western Norway, large amounts of rainfall were announced, and the weather chaos also led to the Bergen Railway being blocked last night.

The passengers thus had to spend the night on the train, which was stuck between Hallingskeid and Myrdal.

The reason was that there had been a snow avalanche that was approximately 15-10 meters wide earlier in the night, and quite large amounts of snow had been reported on the track.

In Eastern Norway and the surrounding area, there were also several people who woke up to a snow-filled winter chaos, and several have experienced challenging driving conditions as a result of the large amounts of snow.

Flooding and road closures

A lot of rainfall in the last 24 hours has also led to flooding and traffic problems in Southern Norway. More than 100 millimeters of rain has fallen in several places in 24 hours, and on Veitrafikksentralen’s websitesseveral closed roads and mountain passes are also reported as a result of the bad weather.

The police in Trøndelag urged also motorists in the area to drive according to the conditions, and possibly bring a shovel and warm clothes. They also warned that there were very demanding driving conditions in large parts of the district.

The worst is over

However, according to the meteorologist on duty at the Meteorological Institute, it may look as if the worst of the storm has fortunately passed.

They tell Dagbladet that the bad weather that has ravaged the past 24 hours has begun to calm down, although there is still a yellow warning for snow in Eastern Norway.

According to the meteorologist, this warning will probably disappear during the evening.

– It will also be a fairly quiet Saturday in large parts of the country. The biggest problem tomorrow is that some places in Eastern Norway and Rogaland may experience local fog, but it will mostly be dry weather in Southern Norway. Some places may also have some scattered showers at the start of the day, with changing cloud cover.

Furthermore, the Meteorological Institute adds that there will be some wind in inland areas and mountainous areas, but this too will decrease over time.

Take reservations

Due to low pressure expected on Sunday, the meteorologist states that there may be a risk of rain in parts of the country – especially in Agder and Telemark.

In Eastern Norway, it is also conceivable that it will freeze over the weekend, and the meteorologist is therefore asking motorists to take precautions if they are going to use the car.

– You have to drive according to the weather conditions. It is possible that the snow will probably melt a little on Sunday – before it then freezes, and those who have to use their car should therefore take extra care and allow plenty of time to get to where they are going.
