For decades, successive Sri Lankan governments have implemented a policy of free education in the country, expanded access to schools and supported student welfare programs, including offering free midday meals. and providing them with subsidized transportation, free textbooks and uniforms, with the ultimate goal of providing inclusive, equitable services and quality general education for every school-aged child in the country.
The sudden economic downturn, during the COVID-19 pandemic, compounded the challenges facing the education system, disproportionately affecting schoolchildren. In a context of budgetary austerity, sanitary, hygienic and nutritional conditions have negatively affected the schooling of children, their learning and their psychosocial well-being.
Sri Lanka is eligible for GPE grants, including a System Capacity Building grant (up to $2.7 million) and a GPE Multiplier grant (up to $2.7 million). an amount of up to $30 million).
