Joint Naval Exercises With China-Iran Held by Russia

Moscow

Russia is currently holding joint military exercises with China and Iran in the Arabian Sea. The joint drills come as Moscow seeks to strengthen its ties with Beijing and Tehran, as the West seeks to isolate those countries invasion of Ukraine.

As reported AFPThursday (16/3/2023), the Russian Ministry of Defense announced in a statement that a trilateral exercise named ‘Sea Security Belt 2023’ had begun located in the vicinity of the port of Chabahar, Iran, on Wednesday (15/3) local time.

It was stated that joint exercises between the navies of the three countries were scheduled to be held on Thursday (16/3) and Friday (17/3) local time.

Russia, said the Defense Ministry, will be represented by the Admiral Gorshkov frigate and a medium-aged tanker in the joint exercise.

During the joint naval exercise, the ships of the three countries will carry out “combined maneuvers and conduct artillery fire day and night.”

President Vladimir Putin has previously stated efforts to improve political, economic and military ties with China and Iran, especially after he ordered the deployment of Russian troops to Ukraine a year ago.

Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, which the Kremlin called a “special military operation”, reaped a series of unprecedented sanctions from Western countries, especially the United States (US).
