Exercise “hurramegrundt” is a well-known challenge at Kompani Lauritzen. In Wednesday’s episode, the participants had to carry a log, better known as the “toothpick”, with them in layers throughout the exercise.
A piece of chocolate is the only solid food they get.
Little food and heavy lifting cause one of the recruits to pass out. Then the team-mate struggles.
Flying in flint of ensign comment
When the participants let loose after a breath on the ground, Thomas Hayes (26) exclaims that he is about to pass out.
– You have to speak up, says Carina Dahl (37) in panic.
Dahl’s comment causes the ensign to react. He explains that the teammates must see each other, rather than letting them know if they need a rest.
That causes Dahl to turn on all the plugs.
See what happened in the video below.
Felt unfair
When TV 2 meets Dahl, she says that she experienced the situation as unfair. The reason why she got excited was for a completely different reason than the ensign’s talk.
At the barracks, Dahl and Hayes share a bunk bed. Dahl speaks warmly of Hayes. The two formed a close friendship in the company.
– Thomas is a very nice and reflective type, but he is perhaps not the one who speaks the loudest or tells how he feels, she begins.
– I remember we had quite a long conversation, the night before the “toothpick”, about whether he should try to take up a little more space, and dare to speak up. He’s an interesting guy, who we’d like to hear more from.
When the participants wear the “toothpick”, they look directly into the back of the teammate in front. Dahl says that it was difficult to see how people felt. Ahead of the exercise, there was a unanimous agreement on the team that everyone had to speak up if it got too heavy or if they had to stop. However, Hayes does not.
– Finally he passes out. I get so scared, jump to my knees and completely panic. I tell him he needs to speak up. Then the ensign says: “It’s nothing you must speak upit is I see you».
The comments from the ensign get Dahl fired up. It all culminates in her wanting to retire.
– There was a completely different background to why I said exactly that, because we had had a long conversation the day before. The ensign had not understood that. Then it dawned on me, she says and elaborates:
– I got so angry. I felt I was being attacked for not doing my job. But it’s not about that. Then it clicked, to say the least, she says with a laugh.
The artist admits that little food and physically heavy lifting may have played a role in the short fuse.
– All in all, everything gets quite intense. There and then I felt it was very unfair in a situation where you were supposed to comfort. I’m terrified if people pass out. Then it’s not time to be attacked, but I was perhaps a little hairy in the setting. It unraveled a bit. The roller blind went down, to say the least.
Became a problem
From the moment the recruits set foot in Setnesmoen camp, they are evaluated by the commander. Dahl is divided in how she thinks the commander read and assessed her.
– I think they were good at reading me, but what became a problem for me was that they are not with us 24/7. We have conversations in the evening, between us. About things we think are difficult, which may not get through to them. Although they take a lot with them, there are also things they don’t take with them, she explains.
In certain situations, such as when Hayes passed out, she experienced that misunderstandings could arise because the officer was not aware of the underlying reasons.
– Sometimes I thought things could be perceived as unfair, and that was because they had not understood the background to things.
– But there is no room to explain that “yes, but”. There is no “yes, but”.
Considering retiring
It is not only Dahl who is considering retiring from the company. TV 2 has previously featured actor Iben Akerlie (35) who received an ultimatum from the production, as they believed she did not deliver enough to the camera crews.
– I received a stern rebuke from the production. They said: “If you are no longer on TV, then it is not appropriate for you to be here”. I experienced it as a kind of ultimatum, although that is perhaps a bit too harsh a word. But they advised that if I wanted to continue to be there, I would have to give to the camera to a greater extent than I did.
In Wednesday’s episode, she once again considers retiring, but for a completely different reason. See why in the video below.
