Public Schools Have Reduced the Number of Security Agents According to Latest Report

Despite the increase in the number of shootings and stabbings near public schools in the city, these schools now have about a thousand fewer security agents than three years ago.

According to a new report released yesterday by the New York Independent Budget Office, Police department figures show that as of the end of February nearly 3,900 security officers were employed.

This represents a 24% decrease compared to the number of agents reported during 2020.

The data is released when the mayor proposes a budget that seeks to eliminate hundreds of vacant school security agent positions from the municipal payroll.

Adams’ proposal means cutting 282 positions to save $10 million this yearwith a progressive increase reaching 832 officers by the year 2027.

School security officers do not carry weapons but are charged with monitoring school entrances, responding to security incidents involving students, and operating metal detectors.
