The Volkswagen Group will set up its first gigafactory for battery production outside of Europe in Canada. It is operated by the subsidiary Power-Co. The cell factory in St. Thomas, Ontario is scheduled to go into operation in 2027. The unit cells manufactured there are intended for the vehicles in the region. VW is currently ramping up production of the ID 4 at the US plant in Chattanooga. In addition, the group will build SUVs and pick-ups for its new Scout brand in Columbia from 2026.
An annual capacity of 200,000 units is aimed for. The two Mexican plants in Puebla and Silao will be expanded and will also produce battery electric vehicles from the second half of the decade and possibly also assemble components such as electric motors. A second e-car plant for the new “Trinity” project was actually supposed to be built around Wolfsburg, but these plans have since been discarded.
