SMK Blog: Expanded Possibilities for Lateral Entry in Teaching

The circle of possible applicants for lateral entry into the teaching profession is being expanded. The Ministry of Education and the main teacher staff council have agreed on this after long negotiations.

So far, a university degree was a basic requirement for lateral entry. That is now changing. In the future, graduates of the vocational academy* and people with a degree from a university of applied sciences can also apply as lateral entrants. Lateral entry is also possible for applicants with a bachelor’s degree without a direct subject assignment.

Minister of Education Christian Piwarz expressed his satisfaction with the decision. »We know that in the near future we will not be able to cover the need for teachers with junior staff who have undergone basic training alone. The greater opportunities for lateral entry help us to close the gaps.«

Applications for trained teachers and lateral entrants are possible via Leo.Sax from the end of March.

*Applicants with a degree from a vocational academy can apply. An appointment can only be made subject to the entry into force of the amended Teacher Qualification Ordinance (LehrerQualiVO). The work on this is in full swing.
