Ebrard Maromas in Washington heading into 2024?

In a fraction of the middle class, the one that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador despises, the perception is growing that Marcelo Ebrard personifies one of the most prepared cadres, not only of the fourth transformation, but of Mexican politics in general. However, this reduced group and with a tendency to continue shrinking seems, still, little defining with respect to the electoral universe.

This perception is supported by the political culture that we inherit and that we nurture as citizens, day after day, six-year term after six-year term, which varies according to the society to which we belong or observe. They are not the same symbols, norms, values, beliefs, myths or ideals on which we Mexicans rely to give meaning to our relationship with institutions, authorities, political actors or elites, as those who live in Scandinavian, South Asian or Western societies. Middle East.

For example, polarization, disdain for institutions, little tolerance and disregard for the rule of law, are aspects that, unfortunately, little by little have been permeating and becoming embedded in the mentality of the Mexican population. And although there is resistance, their gradual adoption is dangerous if it becomes consolidated within the spectrum of that Mexican “political culture”.

However, there is a recent phenomenon that has impacted the construction of this figure, which has already made a dent in other latitudes and it will be possible to see it as a determining factor in the race for the 2024 presidency: nationalism or, as in other cases, the perverse game for distorting it and where the electorate tends to become prey to fallacious reasoning.

It is exactly in this dimension: with a Mexican political culture overwhelmed by the powerful propaganda that disdains the institutions and runs over those who do not agree with their way of thinking, as well as a crude but effective narrative -worthy of the last century- where if You are not against the United States, you are not Mexican, it is worth considering whether Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard has a chance towards 2024.

Initially, the king of TikTok ends up meaning the moderate wing of a party in power that has had as one of its main objectives to erase from the map everything that represents, in his own vision, neoliberalism… Is President López Obrador? Do you want to inherit your project, which has the poor as protagonists, a character seen by its own militants as the personification of technocracy and neoliberalism? From this perspective, it seems difficult for the now chancellor, forged under the Salinista halo and widely nurtured and molded in the Camachista placenta, to access the candidacy for the presidency, at least not by the party that holds power. The dissonance for the hard vote would be a reality no less.

On the other hand, there is the growing perception of surrender towards the United States that weighs on the foreign minister derived from the accusations of the former Mexican Ambassador to the US, Martha Barcena, in addition to the spills in the books of journalists and former US officials who in the The process of portraying the shameful era of Trump outlines a Marcelo Ebrard who, in addition to agreeing resolutions that are disadvantageous to the country, did so – if true – behind the back of his own boss, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

There was no doubt for anyone: The winner of the last North American Summit, where our country received US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, was Marcelo Ebrard, who perfectly understands that the threads of global governance run For a regional agreement and towards 2024, he is the only one who would gather support to configure himself as the “strong” card of the North American bloc due to how ductile it can be in the face of the pressures and needs of the most important partners.

It may not be rational, but the resentment that prevails among Mexicans towards Americans can be explained from Francis Fukuyama’s latest book “Identity. The demand for dignity and the politics of resentment”, where, among other things, he warns that those deep wounds that exist in the community and in turn in the ideological construction of a Nation are usually exploited by populist leaders to continue promoting themselves as saviors or unique protectors.

After 200 years of bilateral relations between Mexico and the United States, which were completed last year, it is not for nothing that the president launches against the neighboring country to the north in the middle of an advanced succession where it is necessary to reinforce, at all costs, the feeling of belonging.

Given this panorama, there are only a couple of questions left. What tricks will Ebrard do in Washington to continue being the “strong” card of the North American block towards 2024 when the mission that AMLO has given him is to kick the hornet’s nest? And the second: if the Mexican political culture understands the president as the main elector of his successor, will AMLO allow the project of the North American bloc with Ebrard as the spearhead to be embedded in the country?

Notes:

A separate issue is whether Marcelo Ebrard ends up getting away well from the fatal accident on Line 12. Will any of the 10 accused by the Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office make the decision to point it out? If so, the Prosecutor’s Office will call him to appear in the middle of the campaign for being the candidate of Morena.
