Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s possible aggression against Taiwan threaten to create a world “defined by danger, disorder and strife,” he said.
Sunak warns that the world is facing the greatest risk of escalation of threats to the level of “uncontrolled conflict” with the use of nuclear weapons in several decades.
The British government today considers countering the threat posed by Russia’s war in Europe to be its immediate security priority.
But the emerging war in the Pacific region, where tensions are rising with China over Taiwan, could have “global consequences, more serious than the conflict in Ukraine”.
In this context, Rishi Sunak called the Chinese Communist Party the “challenge of the age”, although it was previously considered a “systemic problem” by the British authorities.
Tensions around Taiwan
China has rapidly increased its military budget, making no secret of its desire to achieve military parity with the United States. Experts believe that China’s additional spending will mainly be directed to the development of nuclear potential, military space and naval forces.
According to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), China is preparing for a potential war with the United States over control of Taiwan as early as 2027. The CIA believes that Beijing was dismayed by Russia’s failed invasion of Ukraine, but China’s ambitions for Taiwan should not be underestimated.
Meanwhile, some experts believe that the United States is not currently ready for a full-scale war with China. Some important types of ammunition for the Americans will run out in such a war literally within a week, UNIAN reports.
