Ruth E. Carter made history. The costume designer behind the “Black Panther” movies became the first black woman to win two Oscars.
Carter won best costume design Sunday night at the 95th Academy Awards for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” another Marvel installment.
In 2018, Ruth E. Carter won Best Costume Design for “Black Panther,” making her the first African-American to win in this category.
In her speech, Carter thanked the film’s director, Ryan Coogler, and asked if “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman could sponsor her mother, Mabel Carter, who she said passed away last week.
Bosman died in 2020 of cancer at the age of 43. “This is for my mom,” Carter said. “She was 101 years old (…) This movie brought me back to this moment. Chadwick, please take care of my mom.”
Then Carter eulogized her mother behind the scenes. “I had a wonderful relationship with her in her later years. The same relationship she always had with me. I was her support. I was her best friend. I was her companion,” she said.
“I know she’s proud of me. I know she wanted this for me as much as I wanted it for myself,” she added.
Michelle Yeoh is the first Asian to win an Oscar
Malaysian-born actress Michelle Yeoh won the Best Actress Oscar and made history by receiving this prestigious award.
Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win a Best Actress Oscar for her outstanding performance in Everything, Everywhere, at Once.
“For all the little boys and girls watching me tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibility,” Michelle was quoted by the Associated Press as saying. “This is proof that big dreams come true.”
Yeoh’s victory comes nearly 90 years after Louise Rainer, a white actress, won the same category for appearing “yellow face” for her role as a Chinese villager in The Good Earth.
Two awards for India
On the other hand, India achieved two historic awards at the Academy Awards.
The song “Natu Nattu” from the Hindi film “RRR” won the Oscar for Best Original Song.
An Indian film called “The Elephant Whisperers” also won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film.
