36 were injured in the chain accident with 42 vehicles on a highway in Hungary, the world media reported. Five trucks and 37 other vehicles were involved in the accident. The accident happened on the M1 highway about 25 kilometers west of Budapest. The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs later indicated to BTA that there are currently no reports of Bulgarians injured in the chain accident in Hungary.
19 cars caught fire. One of the victims is in danger of life, and 13 of the wounded are in serious condition.
A chain accident involving more than 40 vehicles occurred on the M1 motorway, about 25 kilometers west of Budapest.
Many fire trucks and four rescue helicopters from neighboring cities were dispatched to the scene, bTV reported.
The cause of the chain disaster is still unclear. According to the Hungarian highway operator, a sudden gust of wind may have kicked up dust and reduced visibility on the stretch of highway where the crash occurred.
“Yesterday in Hungary there was a wind of 117 km per hour and it is assumed that the cause of the chain disaster was the dust storm which reduced visibility to zero,” said Georgi Tsanev, who lives in Hungary.
“The authorities in Hungary reacted very quickly. Four helicopters, 17 fire engines and 16 ambulances arrived at the scene. 39 people were injured, of which 10 were children, and four were in a very serious condition. Out of 42 vehicles, 20 were completely burnt,” he added Tsanev.
